Councilman Richards of the Laurelton community visited the STEAM for social justice program last week. The STEAM team were excited to have him visit to see the progress that the Arts and Crafts class has made with the Laurelton Community quilt. The Councilman was very pleased and impressed with the hard work that the Arts and Crafts class has accomplished. The students were delighted with the results of the quilt. They seemed to be very engaged with the councilmen and felt proud of what they have completed. We will be working on the final finishing touches of the quilt such as cutting out and assembling the words STEAM and DIVAS for Social Justice on the quilt. I am satisfied with the end result and proud of the student’s dedication. I believe that the community quilt represents the Laurelton community very well.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
