Its hard to tell who is more excited the kids or myself. Its gratifying to see the kids from last year have advanced to the next grade. Its also exciting to see the new set of children to have joined the steam program. So far this week I have discovered new athletes and new vocalist. The new 6th grade are most intrigued by the new year to come. In the 6th grade class is where I have discovered some new vocalist and dancers.
The new 7th and 8th grade have been given a reintroduction into the program and all that will be accessible to them this year. This year the steam program has provided multiple pieces of training equipment, that will not only take the kids to the next level but bring a different energy to the gym. The kids will be learning a variety of martial arts and sports more specifically Tai Chi, Shaolin Kung Fu, Boxing, Taekwondoe, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football.
In some cases Im willing to blend different activities that suit the energy that kids give off. I prefer to choose activities that both the girls and boys will enjoy together. Understanding that some activities are not loved by both is always a great time to promote respect, and most importantly unselfishness. Unselfishness is a key component into developing great teamwork. My goal is too promote healthy living through fitness and nutritional education. These kids all have big dreams and its my honor to be apart of making that happen.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
