As the mural collaboration at Linden SDA with Rego Park Green Alliance has reached the three week mark, the students have shown a lot of progress in both their teamwork skills and their stenciling prowess.
Right before the long-awaited spring break, the sixth graders completely finished their stencil designs and even got ahead and began practicing their painting on the blank “canvases”.
The STEAM participants practiced painting over their stencils, as well as gathering more information from interviews of their teachers and adults around the community. After gathering the reasons and places that people went through the shadow transit service, the students designed more stencil designs to be cut out and superimposed unto their designs.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
