During the first week of art for this new school year 2017, the students in grades 6,7, and 8 have just begun to discuss and define what art is and who makes art. Students were asked to develop specific art goals that they would like to accomplish this year and they were encouraged to think about the following question: What ideas or art concepts would you like to explore or become better at? Explain why. Students then completed the following statements: In art class this year, I
would like to… I want to do this because… After engaging in dialogue about art, artists, art materials and methods, students created quick sketches of their desired art goals. These sketches will be revisited at a later part of the school year for reflection.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
