Cabbage Chemistry

Acids and Bases experiment!!!

Red cabbage, Lemon.

So, we used red cabbage as an indicator, to test different pH levels in a few liquids, such as… Salt water, lemon aide, lemon juice, baking soda water, detergent, and plain water.

The results were astounding!! The young scientists were amazed by how juice from a red cabbage, when placed into different liquids, could show the level of pH by changing color! Here are a few of our testing strips. Notice the various colors on the strips.

{Hot Pink}=ACID

{Lavender, purple, and Violet}=NEUTRAL

{Green, Lime green }=NEUTRAL

{Yellow}=BASE

Red cabbage pH scale, a few notes, and the children’s recordings of their pH testing results!
We had fun testing pH levels on coffee filter strips!!!”
