Last week Mr. Johnson took the student to a community walk around the neighborhood of East New York. The community walk is gear to taking students out with cameras and mics to document things that are happening live within the community.
The purpose of the walk is to bring awareness to the community in which they go to school in. Students were allowed to document anything they feel needs to get improve or things in which they get inspired by. Some of the things the students documented was littering, garbage, police activity and women and men’s shelter in the neighborhood.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
