Amate Bark Painting, Gesture Drawing, and Foil Sculpture…Oh My!!

This week the 6th grade students are engaged in learning about the Mexican art form of Amate Bark Painting. This project is being done to explore and celebrate the contributions of indigenous art forms from Latin American cultures in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The students became familiar with the history, purpose and technique of Amate Bark Painting. The students are creating their own paintings using brown paper bags instead. The first step was tearing and preparing the paper to have a bark like quality, then the students began their borders. These photos show the beginning process. Please stay tuned!

The 7th and 8th graders are studying form as  3 dimensional space along with body movement. They became familiar with the sculptures of  Alberto Giacometti and how he created elongated human forms. They took turns creating a pose that was sketched quickly as a gesture drawing. The students had to create quick 2 minute sketches just to capture the movement or pose. These drawings were done to prepare  and help them mold and shape the aluminum foil into a sculptural form. When completed they will have a  foil form with a reflected shadow on paper or cardboard. Once again…stay tuned!!
