Screenplays for Social Change

How our students are writing up their own worlds of storytelling:

As our exercises of cinematography, trivia and high-paced improvisational sessions began to cool down and students built organic alliances based on genres out of a hat, we sat down to talk about how they could build their own stories from page to screen.

Our students became excited to flex their writing muscles powered by their zealous creativity. We boiled down to three stories that will be adapted into short films over the next few weeks. Ninja Republic, an action western, written by Kwame, William and Linda, or The Galactic Warfare, a war slapstick like comedy written by Amaya, who also plays Bobby, Alexa, who plans on shooting the film herself, and Jasmine, who’s provided lots of colorful character notes. The Revival, takes a serious turn as it holds itself to the regard of drama and science fiction, it’s authors being Ariel, Kareem and Juan.

Students have spent weeks tweaking at these short plays, workshopping them in writer’s rooms and rehearsal table reads with actors that they hand selected. All in all, the students are enjoying the dedicated process of planning their very own films!
