This week students have been preparing for our interview series with extraordinary members of our school’s community. We have been filming mock interviews to have everything ready and under control when our guests come. The 6th grade will be interviewing Mrs. Leonce, mother of one of our 6th grade students, member of Linden’s PTA, and leader of the Explorers program that meets at Linden. The 7th graders will be interviewing Lady Millard, an artist, activist, and owner of Undr1Roof, an arts residency program. The 8th graders will be interviewing Dawn Roberts Semple, mother of STEAM’s Darrin and Ajani Semple, and professor in the environmental sciences department at York College. Students will be filming, interviewing, and participating as audiences members of these panel discussions, which will be centered around the topics our classes have been covering (i.e. Laurelton and South Queens history, community activism, race, class, and gender).
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
