Budding Journalists

Welcome back!

This year, the eighth-grade participants in the STEAM for Social Change program at Linden SDA School are excited to be working on a new project. Having mastered 3D printing last year, the ambitious senior class will be working on a new project, honing their writing skills becoming community journalists for Laurelton’s community newsletter, Laurelton.nyc.

They will be learning about how to pitch a news story, how to write articles well, and most importantly, why their voices are important, and encouraging them to be active members of their community.

Writing for the newsletter will give the youth a voice, a chance to see their name in digital print, and a chance to write about things that they are passionate about, a sense of purpose, an obligation to the community, as well as to improve their writing skills. Writing and covering news around the community will also give the students a bigger picture view of the world they live in, hopefully encouraging them to develop a  stronger sensitivity to public policy and government, to be more politically aware.

The eighth-graders are eager and excited to begin their year as community journalists, as am I to see them become more active, open-minded members of the Laurelton community.
