DIVAS For Social Justice/STEAM For Social Change offers the Jamaica SDA school free monthly interactive STEAM based workshops. Today we had our first workshop and the students created 3D pop up books, designed to become a 3 dimensional story. The Jamaica SDA middle schoolers created these amazing books by constructing, cutting, measuring, and attaching card stock color paper together to form colorful book art. Students filled their books with stories about themselves, their family as well as their thoughts on how they feel they can change their community and what changes they would like to see globally. Students are encouraged to fill their book art with images that goes along with their unique stories.
It was a fun, interactive STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) based activity that they can now teach others to do on their own. Can’t wait for next month!
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
